I left Uni and came back home to live with my parents, I soon found that most of my school friends had left home and were deciding to carry on living in their Uni towns. This left me looking for friends and things to do outside work. Previously I was in Air Cadets and I went back to Air Cadets and I looked at becoming an Adult Instructor but I found the commitment too great and found it wasn’t the right thing for me. I had grown out of Air Cadets. I knew I wanted to help out the local community and develop a circle of friends. After a bit of searching on the web I found Milton Keynes Rotaract and decided to give it a go.

Two years later, I have a good circle of friends that I can meet up with and Rotaract has given me plenty of opportunities. I am the current serving Club President and District Chairman. As President I manage the club with the help of the serving council and in my District role I report to Rotaract in Great Britain and Ireland, the national council. Royce, our link with Rotary has given members of the club opportunities to go on leadership courses and all expenses paid (except for spending money) exchanges to Australia, USA and South Korea – its not everyday you get that opportunity. National Rotaract each year offer places for the annual event to join them on their international community projects; this year it is focusing on a water supply project in Africa.

As a Club we meet up regularly to go each other’s houses for games nights, DVD nights, pizza or chocolate tasting nights, or we go to the cinema or bowling. The list is varied and we try to balance the expensive events with low cost events as we know we all have limited budgets. Check out the long list of activities on our site for examples.

The great thing about Rotaract is that you attend when you can and there great people there to help you out. An example of that is a member of the club helped me yesterday put up a shed in our garden, in the wintery rain; those sorts of friends are hard to come by. So I suggest, you drop us an email and come along to one of our events!

I joined Milton Keynes Rotaract 2 years ago when I moved to Milton Keynes for work. Being new to the area I didn't know many people and thought it would be a good opportunity to make some friends and get involved with community work.

The socials were great for getting to know the local area as there are lots of walks, picnics, pub nights as well as community events like street fayres. Straight away everyone was really friendly and proved helpful when buying a house by recommending a good solicitor!

Since I joined the club I've made some great friends and had a lot of laughs. There have been some great socials including pancake parties, rounders matches, a New Years Eve boat cruise on the Thames, poker nights and BBQ's and last year I also joined the committee as joint Social for a year which was fun.

There are lots of chances to get involved with community events as well, such as helping Father Christmas at Frosts garden centre, charity collections, shoe box appeals and lots more.

The best thing about Rotaract is you can do as little or as much as you like and there are always different things going on which you can get involved in!

Since joining Rotaract my social life has improved beyond all recognition. There is always something to get involved in from games nights at people's houses and pub nights to trips away. Recently, we went on a day trip to France and a bank holiday weekend on a Caravan Park in Clacton. You will certainly need to buy yourself a diary to keep track of all the events.

And of course there are the good deeds we do for the good of the community. Recently we helped out at a local Music Festival in Great Linford and attempted to sell the winning charity raffle ticket to win a VW Beetle.

The great thing about Rotaract is the fact that there is always something which is going on to get involved with. If you are looking to meet new friends then Rotaract is a great place to achieve that aim.

I joined Rotaract in January 1999. My friends all having left for University the previous autumn, I felt very isolated, and when I saw Rotaract advertised in my local library I thought it sounded just the thing I was looking for. And I was right!

Through joining Rotaract I have made a lot of new friends, done lots of different things including pubbing, clubbing, walking weekends, a booze cruise to France....... and as well as social events there have been community projects to take part in, for example tin shakes, gardening, pond clearing.

After my first year in the club, I took up the role of Secretary (mainly to practise my shorthand!). The role is primarily to take the minutes at the fortnightly meetings and write letters (ie to Tesco to thank them when they allow us to do a tin shake on their premises) etc.

One great thing about being involved in Rotaract is that it looks very good on your CV. It has also added a whole new dimension to my social life and joining it is one of the best things I have ever done.
