Back in the day... when I were a lad and a member of Bletchley Rotaract, there were around 20 clubs in district 126 (as was, now 1260).
I joined Bletchley Rotaract in around 1991. Bletchley was a strong club in district then, with around 25/30 members. We used to meet inteh upstaires room at the Bull and Butcher pub in Fenny Stratford.
We were part of a "three way twinning", if that's at all possible, with two smaller local clubs, Buckingham and Leighton Buzzard.
Leighton Buzzard came to feature a lot in my life and has much to answer for. I started dating a girl from the club and she defected and joined up with Bletchley. This kind of thing happened a lot.
Laura and I married in 1996 and moved to Dorset a year later, where we still live.
Several members of the Bletchley and Buckingham clubs were at the interest meeting for the setting up of a more northerly club in Milton Keynes. This club became known as MK Rural and they had a wodden Cow as their mascot.
As a busy district, each club would put on an event twice a year, so there would always be something to do on a Saturday somewhere in district. Much petrol would be consumed by Rotaractors driving around Herts, Beds and Bucks trying to find venues and having to pop into garages while wearing fancy dress for directions.
Watford Rotaract held a claim to fame, in that their sponsoring Rotary club held within its membership an certain Albert Ridgley, father of Andrew Ridgley, the other half of Wham! (You might need to wikipedia that one, you young whipper snappers).
In fact, Watford Rotaract was once the largest club in district with in excess of 40 members.
Anyway... i guess the Great Amwell traction Rally is no longer attended by Rotaract. We used to get over to the Banbury Caming Rally in August. A weekend of beer, football, beer, dancing, beer, debauchery, beer, Volleyball and beer. That event ran every August bank holiday and brought clubs from the whole country.
Also... District conference... An event where 20/30 commited Rotaractors would spend a year planning for a conference to be attended by Rotaract and Rotary. Normally held by the coast, my first conference was just down the road now at Osmintongton Mills, near Weymouth. Much like Banbury with the beer, dancing, beer, party, debauchery, beer etc, but not under canvas.
IIRC, there was another version of Rotaract set up for those over 30, but not ready to dribble soup with Rotary. I think there was a club set up in Milton Keynes. A few old Rotaractors may still be members there.
All the best folks.
Garry.
P.S. I still have a couple of old district conference committe rugby shirts. One's from Norton Grange and another from Bracklesham Bay.
